FROM ME TO YOU // WEEKLY FOOD PLANNER

The lovely Tillie invited me to hang out in her blog and be part of her birthday week. She had a bunch of neat giveaways and I was stoked to be part of it. For me, food is pretty important (and not always in a good, "food is fuel" kinda way.) Since starting my weight loss journey in 2013 I definitely found that planning was the key to success. Without planning out your meals, it's pretty easy to be led astray and give in to temptation.

To make it a little more fun, and less of a drag, I designed these super cute Weekly Food Planners to encourage you all to make better choices when it comes to food. They even come in four different colours so there should be at least one to suit you all!

GIFT WRAPPED // STENCIL DESIGN

Alright, let's get this started. You can see the "rules" here, but basically I asked 5 of my creative friends to come up with an easy and effective way to wrap gifts. Matt is a graphic designer, so naturally he got fancy with a stencil.

W H A T  Y O U  N E E D :
- Brown recycled wrapping/packaging paper
- Craft Knife
- Paper/card
- Pen (if you're drawing your own stencil)

T H E  E X T R A S :
Paint
1 x sponge

Obviously this is a very straight forward process, but you can make it as simple or as detailed as you want depending on how long you want to be cutting the stencil out for.

First you must decide on your artwork. You can make something simple on a computer or you can draw it by hand. If you make it on the computer you will have to either use paper as the stencil or you could stick that paper to card so the stencil is sturdier and will hold it's shape better. Just keep in mind the simpler the artwork the less work you will be creating for yourself.

Now it's time to cut out the stencil. Because I am a crazy person, I weirdly enjoy this part, but for most people it will probably be a tedious and lengthy process. Depending on how detailed the stencil you are making is, and how careful / particular you are when cutting it out, this really can take quite a while. So be prepared to get cramp in your hand for holding that craft knife for too long.

All done? Great! That last 5 hours of that stencil just flew past. Now to paint. If you haven't done already, wrap you damn present. and I probably should have mentioned to create your stencil so it fits nicely within the shape of your present. My bad if it's too late.

HINT : I cut my sponge into 4 smaller sponges to make it easier to dip into the paint without having to use the whole giant sponge.

Put the paint in a container of some sort, lay the stencil on the present, and start painting. If you want you can stick the stencil down with a bit of celotape but usually this paper is fairly unrelenting and doesn't like adhesive tape being pryed off it once it has bonded so be careful. I just hold my stencil in place, which usually goes pretty well.

Apply the paint as you wish but I just slowly dip the end of the sponge into the paint and tab it over the stencil. Gives it a bit of a stamp effect, but do as you wish.

Viola, you're basically done. Now just let it dry and clean up your mess you slob.

Haha! Matt, your instructions were awesome, and of course so was your gift wrap idea! A stencil is such a good idea, and I love that you can come up with any design you like!

GIFT WRAPPED // EARTH & FLORAL TOPPER

Alright, let's get this started. You can see the "rules" here, but basically I asked 5 of my creative friends to come up with an easy and effective way to wrap gifts. Laura got creative and used outdoor elements for her gift wrap idea!

W H A T  Y O U  N E E D :
- 2 x coloured paper, one brown and one pink.
- Sewing machine thread in pink
- Scissors
- Tape

T H E  E X T R A S :
1 x fake flower - this could be real, or another type of topper)
1 x stick (from outside)

First things first is to get the stick down to the correct size that you want, I wanted mine to be contained in the length of the wrapped present, so I popped the stick on top of the present and guestimated how much to break off. I did this with my hands to keep the earthy feel, but you could trim it with secateurs or a good pair of scissors.

Start wrapping your thread around the stick. This bit is a bit tedious if you are wanting to perfectly wrap your stick in thread, or have certain parts wrapped. I went for a ‘rustic’ or more lazy approach and just did what felt and looked right. I definitely think it looks better when the thread is up and down rather than on an angle - but each to their own. When you’d achieved your desired look on the stick, double knot the thread and cut to trim, to ensure the ribbon stays put.

Using the second coloured paper I made a makeshift ribbon for the box. I cut a 1.5 inch thick strip and folded each end in to create a thinner straight ribbon from the paper. I simply taped the ends to the bottom of the present.

Place the stick and flower on top of the paper ribbon to find out how you might want the end result to look. Get creative!

Eddie decide he wanted to get creative with me ;)

Grab some more thread and overlay it in your hand so you get a few strings of it. Put it under through the paper ribbon and tie over the stick and flower to secure into place.

And you're done! Thank you for sharing your idea with us Laura! I think it's so great. And awesome because you could change up the topper and colours to suit anyone.

GIFT WRAPPED // TISSUE PAPER FLOWERS

Alright, let's get this started. You can see the "rules" here, but basically I asked 5 of my creative friends to come up with an easy and effective way to wrap gifts. I'm loving the paper flowers that Tillie came up with!

Tillie's idea is super easy and super cute! What I love is that you you could use any kind of paper that you want! It would be fun to add patterns in as well.

W H A T  Y O U  N E E D :
String
Scissors
Brown paper
Sellotape

T H E  E X T R A S :
Crepe paper

Cut 3 long pieces of tissue paper and plait them together. This makes a nice little ribbon substitute. Then, it's just a matter of assembling your flowers. I basically took the idea from those tissue pom poms that are all the rage at the moment. I took a length of tissue paper and cut it to about 10 centimetres wide. Then I did a tight little accordian fold, tied a piece of string right around the middle and then scrunched the tissue paper around in a circle to make a flower shape. I repeated this with a few extra colours of tissue and used a bit of sticky tape to adhere them in a little pattern. Boom! There you have it. A beautiful and quick little gift wrap for someone special.

GIFT WRAPPED // LACE & FLOWERS

Alright, let's get this started. You can see the "rules" here, but basically I asked 5 of my creative friends to come up with an easy and effective way to wrap gifts. Here is Zenica and her lace and flower idea!

I absolutely love what Zeni has done. It's such a sweet idea and you could use any flower that you have in the garden.

W H A T  Y O U  N E E D :
Twine
Scissors
Brown paper
Sellotape

T H E  E X T R A S :
Lace
Flower

Here's how you do it.

Wrap your gift however neatly with the brown paper, and fasten with tape. I have been known to use masking tape, duct tape, electrical tape, or even no tape and have relied on the string to hold the paper together. If you just go with what you have, and make it look purposeful, then you'll be able to make it work!

Wrap a length of lace (or ribbon, strip of material, etc) around the width of the gift and fasten with tape on the bottom or tie with a knot on the top.

Tie the string as many times around the width and length of the gift as you'd like and tie with a bow on the top. Tie in a flower or two to add a thoughtful touch (fresh or dried lavender looks and smells beautiful with this gift wrap).

And there you have it! A beautiful but simple idea that will definitely make any present shine!

GIFT WRAPPED // KUMARA STAMP

Alright, let's get this started. You can see the "rules" here, but basically I asked 5 of my creative friends to come up with an easy and effective way to wrap gifts. Let's start off with Eva and her kumara stamp idea!

Eva decided to get creative and make her own stamp using a kumara! Pretty clever if you ask me. This DIY gift wrap idea is definitely something you could do using bits and pieces around the house.

W H A T  Y O U  N E E D :
1 x pencil
1 x craft knife
Patterned paper
1 x twine/ribbon/string

T H E  E X T R A S :
1 x kumara (or potato)
Black paint/ink

This idea is great because you can make any design that you want into a stamp! All you need to do is cut your kumara (or potato) in half, draw on your design, and cut out the space that you don't want stamped. From there, you can stamp the design wherever/however you like! Eva used a map print to wrap and I love it! Such a great idea and adds a bit of contrast with the simple stamp design.

GIFT WRAPPED x 6

A little while ago, I was thinking about what aspects of my life could do with a bit of a creative spruce up. Being a graphic designer gives me a bit of extra creativity I suppose, but I find that I don't always make the most of it. However, not having a lot of money is definitely a good motivator to get me thinking outside of the square.

One thing that I am pretty lazy about is gift wrapping. I know it seems like a pretty silly thing to worry about, but I feel like half of the fun of receiving a present is seeing it first. Seeing that lovely wrapping paper with the matching bow. I'm not saying you have to go all out! But I do appreciate a nicely wrapped present. When Rob and I have been in a rush, we've bought a cheap $2 gift bag and a $5 card and shoved the gift inside. This is going to change. I'm going to do my own gift wrap. And I'm going to love it!

I thought about doing a little "round up" of my own ideas, to help me (and you of course) create some easy and cheap "looks" for gifts but I had a better idea! Instead of me coming up with ideas, I figured if I got 5 of my creatives to come up with some ideas, we'll have a lot more variety and something to suit everyone!

I was going to give them free reign, but that seemed a little bit too easy (and we all know how much I love my challenges.) I've given them a list of materials that each of them are able to use. This way you'll will hopefully have whatever they use at home, and if not, you should!

And here is the fun part. Each of my friends can pick 2 other materials that they want to use. It can be anything! I thought about everyone having to use the same stuff but I think half the fun is finding random things around the house that you can use.

I'm really excited to show you all what they came up with. I'm so lucky to have such creative friends. I'm planning on sharing them all over this week, so tomorrow, we'll be starting with Eva! She got fancy with a kumara, it's definitely a technique that I plan on trying myself.

A Birthday Print

Yesterday I shared some photos of our weekend away with my lovely Kathryn. Kathryn is such a gem. Seriously. I've known her since I was about four. I know what I'm talking about. We've been to all the same schools and even started out tap dancing together. Yip. Tap dancing. We were pretty darn cool. I'm so lucky to be able to call her my friend. She has the kindest heart and is honestly the best friend.

Here is a little illustration I drew for her birthday present.
(Excuse the IPhone photos. We were in a bit of a rush and I ran out of time to photograph it nicely.)

Love you Kathy :) xxx

Moodboard : Laura Laura

My lovely friend from Laura Laura (originally The Dizain Collective) has decided to rebrand her wonderful blog. I'm so lucky that she approached me, she's going to be such a gem to work with.

I've really been trying to stick with this whole "Moodboard" idea because it definitely helps to make sure that your vision is the same as theirs. She wants a sweet but modern feel, and maybe cats. Cats! In her moodboard I included the kind of type she's after, different illustration styles and the colours I thought would suit. Luckily she loved it all so it made my job ten times easier.

I can't wait to get started on her rebrand. And of course, to show you!

Banana Cake from Make Like Zen

In the weekend I had a little gathering to celebrate Rob and I moving in together and so my friends could have a little nosey at our new place.

I thought I'd make a few decorations (I will post the DIYS later this week) and decided that a cake would be a mighty fine idea. I had planned on making a little cake topper but I couldn't find any skewers. Useless! I guess it's just another excuse to have another occasion for cake.

I asked the lovely Zenica from Make Like Zen to bake the cake and she was kind enough to share the recipe with you all. I knew that it would be delicious, and it sure was! It was also huge so I guess that will be our breakfast for the next couple of days.

Z E N I C A ' S  B A N A N A  C A K E

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups plain flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
pinch of salt
4 very ripe bananas, mashed
4 eggs
1 cup oil

How to:
Sift the flour, baking powder and baking soda along with the salt into a large bowl. Stir in the white sugar.
Whisk together the brown sugar, bananas, eggs and oil in a separate bowl. Fold the egg mixture into the dry ingredients, and mix together until all combined.
Divide the mixture evenly between two 23cm round cake tins that have been lined with baking paper. Bake in the oven at 160˚C for about 45 minutes, or until the cakes have risen and spring back when lightly touched.
Let cool fully on a cooling rack before icing.

L E M O N  C R E A M  C H E E S E  I C I N G

Ingredients:
200g cream cheese
100g butter, softened
3 cups icing sugar
1 lemon

How to:
Beat the cream cheese and butter together really well, then sift in one cup of icing sugar at a time, beating well after each addition. Finely grate in the zest of the lemon, and add a little of the lemon juice if you would like the icing to be less thick. Beat well, then use to ice the cooled banana cakes.

Cut the tops off the cakes to even the surface, then spread some icing on the top of one cake. Place the other on top of it (upside down) and ice the top and sides of the whole thing.

I C I N G  T I P S

Use a cake spatula or knife with a smooth flat surface to spread the icing. Dollop some icing on to the cake using a spoon, then use a sweeping motion to spread the icing, but be sure to touch only the icing and not the cake itself to prevent crumbs in the icing. Place the cake in the fridge or freezer briefly if the icing has become too runny and hard to work with. If the icing is too cold and won't smooth properly, then warm your spatula up by running under hot water, dry it off then smooth the icing.

365 Miles Over Days : February Update

Well, I think that this month was better. I actually stayed on track (28 miles/28 days) but I'm still a few miles behind from January. This month, Rob is getting more involved, so I think that will help me to stay a little more motivated. I'm definitely going to try and keep my running stats up this month because in February, my walking/running stats started to even out a bit.
My biggest failure this month was the extra challenge for February. With the squat challenge, it was a bit easier to complete because you can do squats anywhere and in any clothes. If I wanted to do the five minutes of skipping everyday, I had to get on my sports bra and my sports gear. This definitely stopped me from doing it but I tried my best to get over half way and I succeeded! Small victories huh? I also ran my first 5km (3 miles) which was pretty awesome and I've improved my running pace quite a bit which means I'm getting closer to my 6km in 30 minutes goal. Hopefully this month will be about me owning that 5km run. Don't forget that you can still join in on our 365MilesOverDays challenge - it will be a little hard to catch up but at least it's start! And you can even follow our progress on Instagram using the hashtag #365milesoverday

Meet and Greet : Jackie from Jackie Jean

Haha! Fooled you! There is one last addition to my Meet and Greet series. I hope you have enjoyed reading about my friends. I reckon they are a pretty neat bunch. Last up, we have Jackie. She's my cousins wonderful fiancee and has recently started a beauty blog. Here we go!

Right, let's start with an easy one. What is the name of your blog?

And what do you do when you aren't blogging?
Apparently, not blogging is where it's at right now. I'm in my final year of my nursing degree and it is already hectic. Unlike most students I went back to university mid-January, and am already in my 4th week of shift work at Auckland hospital. So right now my life is totally summed up by either free labour at the hospital, time at university and then paid employment in the gaps. Occasionally I do get to see my cats and fiancé, although quite often it's when they're sleeping.

Why did you decide to start a blog?
I'm a total YouTube addict, and a long with most of their channels comes accompanying blogs, which I also read religiously. Also, a lot of people in my life don't care so much about my new lipstick, or about a crazy idea I had that day, and I’m not much for a journal so I decided to put it all online.

If you had to describe yourself in only three words, which words would you use?
Determined, Loyal and Passionate - I know it's cheating but could control-freak be counted as one word?

Name 5 things that you would like to achieve this year.
My goals are pretty straightforward this year:
1. GRADUATE - Gosh darn it, has it been a long time coming, I want an income again!
2. Get to the USofA - We have a 5-week trip planned over December and January as kind of a graduation present. Unfortunately, a low income and a 20k holiday go together like chalk and cheese.
3. Exercise - Shocker right? Although, I’m not talking about joining the gym and getting ripped, I just wanted to get into some kind of regular activity, walking around the block, a dance class, anything that's not totally un-enjoyable.
4. Read books that aren't magazines or text books! I love to read so much and really want to make the time. Maybe I need an audio one for the car? But even still it would be nice to unplug from reality and from technology just for a half hour a day. (Also I have this dream that one day I’ll have a floor to ceiling book case full to the brim, and all with books I have actually read).
5. Take more photos – I’m already an instagram addict. But I mean photos other than of my food or my outfit. Photos that really do become beautiful memories.

Okay, just for fun... What song currently sums up your life right now?
Life Happens by Leah and Brandon. It's beautiful and the song makes so many wonderful points about how sh*t happens whether you like it or not. So just get on with it and do the things you want to do.

What TV show are you digging at the moment?
I'm such a TV (online) junkie. I could never pick just one. Probably Teen Wolf and the Originals. I’m a Vampire Diaries addict but I think The Originals is even better! Or maybe it's just because I’m totally in love with Klaus.

Tonight is your last meal. Just kidding! But for the sake of the question, what would you want to eat as your last meal?
Probably guacamole, I’m just obsessed with avocado at the moment, either that or something with Feta. And seeing as it's a meal there is dessert too right?! So of course anything chocolate will do just fine.

Let's say, hypothetically, that you could travel to anywhere in the world. Where would you go, and why?
There is absolutely no one answer for that except EVERYWHERE. I don’t like being stationary for too long and I love a good adventure. It’s literally like going to a whole new world when you go somewhere new. Different cultures and ways of life totally change you’re perspective. I think we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget how much else there really is out there.

Looking waaay into the future, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Married, well travelled, my nursing career should be on track and 10 years from now should be about the time for some baby making. Also rich and famous would be terrific BUT I’ll keep that as plan B for now.

How did you and Kate meet?
She is my wonderful fiancés, beautiful cousin. And it 24 months will be family x

Although J A C K I E and I aren't super close, I can't wait for her to become an "official" part of our family! Thank you for sharing a little about yourself with us!

You can find her on instagram / pinterest

Meet and Greet : Zenica from Make.Like.Zen

Here is our final addition to my Meet and Greet section - where you get to meet the awesome girls on my F R I E N D S list in the side bar of my blog. I've known Zeni for about 11-12 years now and I'm so glad we've managed to stay friends after all these years. Her blog is fairly new but it's full of delicious recipes and sweet photography.

Right, let's start with an easy one. What is the name of your blog?

And what do you do when you aren't blogging?
I have a boutique catering business, Delízen Catering Ltd. And I play a lot of football.

Why did you decide to start a blog?
It's kind of the next step for me with my business. I've had it for nearly 2 years now, and this is one way in which I wish to expand it. Also, I think one of best things you can do with things you know a lot about is to share them with others, because other people's enthusiasm for their passions can be quite contagious, and uplifting. I LOVE food and my favourite thing to do is to share experiences with people revolving around food, and having a (somewhat) presence on the interwebs is the perfect way for me to share what I'm passionate about

If you had to describe yourself in only three words, which words would you use?
Passionate, contemplative... resourceful?

Name 5 things that you would like to achieve this year.
Goals are tricky for me to vocalise. But let's start small

1. I'd like to learn/practice absorbing and retaining information better. For example, I get fed a lot of interesting knowledge by my friends in the wine industry, I just have trouble remembering it because I have nothing visual to pair it with in my mind. So perhaps a diary where I can draw my thoughts and information would help there... My study notes were always in the form of sketches and pictures. And I studied science!
2. I'm going to get good at juggling. With a football that is. Practice practice practice
3. I'd love to practice speaking Dutch this year, with the hope of being able to communicate to (or understand at least) all my family-in-law in Holland
4. I'm going to jump off a bridge at some stage
5. And finally, I want to practice recording my thoughts a little better. If it's not helpful to me, maybe one day at least it could be helpful to somebody else

Okay, just for fun... What song currently sums up your life right now?
Drunk in Love - Beyonce. No just kidding. Maybe... Pigs on the Wing (parts I & II) by Pink Floyd, from their original 1977 album Animals. In so many words, it's a 2 part song about companionship that encompass an album about the critique of society at that time, yet I still find it relevant for today.
Sorry that wasn't fun really was it, but it's lovely when you sort of look at it in the way that all you need is your love, and the problems of the world will become less directly relevant to you

What TV show are you digging at the moment?
How I Met Your Mother! Or HIMYM as it's called by the people of the internet, so my husband and I call it hi-mimya, in an attempt to say it phonetically. Anyway, watching a bit of light-hearted tv is something I love to do with him, but we have to actually set aside time to sit down and watch tv together, so we try squeeze that in once a week to relax and chill

Tonight is your last meal. Just kidding! But for the sake of the question, what would you want to eat as your last meal?
A hand-made burger on a soft ciabatta bun, stacked in this order: Bun, truffle oil aioli, sweet, mustardy caramelised onions, charcoal barbequed pattie, melted vintage cheddar on top, PICKLES, a homemade tomato relish, crispy cos lettuce, more truffle oil aioli, bun. With a side of crispy squished roasted baby potatoes (roasted in duck fat = essential)

Let's say, hypothetically, that you could travel to anywhere in the world. Where would you go, and why?
Somewhere in the Tuscan region of Italy. I think I belong there.

Looking waaay into the future, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Surrounded by lots and lots of love, light and laughter with family and friends.

How did you and Kate meet?
Math class, age 10/11. She was just as incredibly creative back then, I remember her getting top points in the class for our house plans we had to design. Mine was cool, it was big and structured and probably copied from an existing house; her's was amazing, with indoor fountains and archways and views out the window and such. It was a pure product of her imagination, and I'm so proud that she's using every bit of it still today.

Z E N I, thanks so much for sharing a bit of yourself with us. I'm so lucky to have you around!

Meet and Greet : Dawn from Divine-Limits

We are about half way through our introductions to our wonderful girls who are on my F R I E N D S list on my side bar. Next up we have this awesome girl called Dawn. We met while studying at the same design school and have luckily remained friends ever since.

Right, let's start with an easy one. What is the name of your blog?
Divinelimits. Something that I made up when…. I can't recall exactly, but remember liking the idea of it being prophetic to my future. (ooo big words :P)

And what do you do when you aren't blogging?
Procrastinating. Either out in the sun, eating, at the gym or on the internet.

Why did you decide to start a blog?
Well, why not? Everyone else has one, so I kinda wanted one too (yes, i'm I that kinda person). Plus I wanted a place that was dedicated to me where I can post photos and just general ranting and raving about anything and everyone. I like the fact that you can write whatever you want, and people follow and read your post - not because they know you (as such) but because what you produce is interesting to them. Comforting to know your not the only weirdo around town! hahahaha

If you had to describe yourself in only three words, which words would you use?
Am. Always. Right (in that order) I jest, I jest…. Ummm - Optimistic, Open-minded aaaaaaaaand….. Awesome ;P

Name 5 things that you would like to achieve this year.
1 - Have a healthier life style. Which includes not only exercising but making  better decisions on what goes in my body.
2 - Expand my cooking repertoire. Which currently includes stir-fry and scrambled eggs. (note: Anyone that's had my scrambled eggs, knows its the bomb-diggity.) While I'm here, I may as well tell you that I have a habit of burning pizza. It's way to easy to pop it in the over and forget about it.
3 - Design more. May as well put that 30k student loan to good use, right?!
4 - Travel. Anywhere warm.
5 - Achieve my 4 things to achieve.

Okay, just for fun... What song currently sums up your life right now?
Work - Britney Spears.

What TV show are you digging at the moment?
Revenge. At the moment I'm trying to wait patiently for it to restart in March as it's on a TWO MONTH hiatus. And naturally, it's the middle of the season. Just imagine Ryan Secrest on American Idol… but then you never know who wins. For two months. It's ridiculous. so painful.

Tonight is your last meal. Just kidding! But for the sake of the question, what would you want to eat as your last meal?
Last meal huh? That's a toughy! I would go with…. my friends mum Lyn, her Curried Sausages w/ mashed potatoes. Please and Thank you.

Let's say, hypothetically, that you could travel to anywhere in the world. Where would you go, and why?
I have an issue with the cold, where I'm pretty sensitive to it - but i can with stand the heat.. So It definitely have to be a warm one…. Oh! I've always wanted to go to Greece <3 Ahhhh

Looking waaay into the future, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I don't know if my eye sight can see that far! But I think I can make out a small design studio with mustaches on mugs filled with tea, a passport full of visa stamps, my Mr by my side, one or two little people aaaaand a few grey hairs.

How did you and Kate meet?
This is a funny story. I was driving down Howick when I saw this girl trying to dance and she was absolutely rubbish at it. So, feeling sorry for her - I pulled over and gave her a few tips to help improve her technique. Long story short, I also taught her how to sing, play violin and how to use photoshop…. So basically she owes her entire career to moi. *hair flip*

Hahaha KIDDING.
I met Kate at my first year at Yoobee (nee Natcoll) and we used to catch the bus together. I guess we really bonded over our uncanny ability of interpretive dance. Plus we're both Niuean, so we practice our 'brown' lingo with each other. Us brownies gotta stick togeva ay gee.

Haha, like that actually happened D A W N! That story reminds me of all the bus rides too and from design school, where we would talk nonsense and make up stories. Thanks so much for sharing a little more about yourself!
